Old Basing Lawn Tennis Club - Finals Day Results 2016

OBLTC FINALS DAY - 3rd September 2016

On Saturday, 3rd September Old Basing Lawn Tennis Club held its Summer Tournament Finals Day. The club has run tournaments since 1931! The matches that took place earlier in the day enjoyed dry, warm but windy conditions. Unfortunately, as forecast, the weather deteriorated later in the afternoon, but the finalists soldiered on, playing some excellent tennis despite the wind and the rain. A couple of matches were cut short as conditions worsened, but we at least had a winner in each category.

In the Men’s Singles Phil Dixon put up a good fight in the first set, taking Jamie Thomas to a tie break which Jamie won. Jamie then went on to win the second set 6-2. This is the fourth time Jamie has won the Singles title.
Score: 7-6 (7/0), 6-2

The Ladies’ Singles saw Jemma Godleman and Penny Luke battling against the inclement weather as well as each other! University student Jemma managed to win her fifth singles title in a tough match which was cut short due to the wind and the rain.
Score: 6-3

The last match to be finished was the Men’s Doubles, a repeat of last year’s final. This time Andy Mountford & Jamie Thomas were victorious beating James Chamberlin & Phil Dixon in a closely fought contest. The match was cut short, and a championship tie break was played, as the weather had deteriorated further. All four men put on a great show, playing some great tennis, despite the heavy rain.
Score: 5-7, 6-3, 10/4

Last year’s Ladies’ Doubles winners, Sandie Benham & Bev Cleaver were again victorious. The first set against Penny Luke & Jane Hatter was very close and could have gone either way. In the second set Bev & Sandie proved to be the stronger pair and won it convincingly 6-1.
Score: 7-5, 6-1

The Mixed Doubles was a very entertaining three set match. Bev Cleaver & Phil Dixon won the first set convincingly, but in the second set Penny Luke & Andy Mountford battled hard to win the tie break, they then went on to win the third and deciding set.
Score: 2-6, 7-6 (7/4), 6-3

The Men’s Handicapped Final proved to be a battle against the elements as well as a battle between the competitors! Harvey Loake & Mike Chamberlain had a handicap of -15 and managed to win a tough first set against Nigel Hatt & Brad Shaw (0 handicap). In the second set Harvey & Mike found their form and won convincingly.
Score: 6-4, 6-1

The Ladies’ Handicapped Final was an interesting three setter with both couples having the same handicap. Cas Lomax & Sarah Lloyd ran away with the first set, but Heather Mountford & Lynne Thomas found some form and won the second set. The third set was quite a tussle, with Cas & Sarah gaining the upper hand and winning.
Score: 6-0, 4-6, 6-4

At the end of the day trophies were presented to the winners and runners up by Mike Sant. Despite the heavy rain we managed to enjoy a barbecue in the evening at the club house.
